2011 St Johns Zinfandel (DUPLICATE)

VITICULTURE:

Gravel over sand soil.   Limited vigour from the soil to limit yields.   VSP vines.   Green fruit pruning, fruit thinning post veraison.

PICKED:

Hand Picked 25/3/2011

VINIFICATION:

Cold Soaked for 4 days at 5 degrees, 5% stalk inclusion, PDM Champagne yeast, Gentle pump over, gentle pressing—aiming for colour not tannin, and malolactic performed in oak and stainless steel, before oak maturation.

MATURATION:

18 months in new and used year old French, American and Hungarian barriques and hogs heads. This was the first year we have used Hogs Heads, and are very happy with the results.

BOTTLED:

July 2012, no fining agents used, coarse filtration.

TASTING NOTES:

Colour: Ruby red in colour.   

Aroma: A wonderfully vibrant wine with intense aromas of plums, black cherries, tobacco, coffee, mocha, chocolate, pine needles and smoky oak nuances.

Palate: Mouth filling and rich. Ripe plums, overlaying cherries and some lovely spice with raisins, with integrated chocolate and cocoa. The finish is long and soft and Amazing contrast of dark fruits, integrated chocolate and smoky oak, with fresh cherries and spices wrapping it all up. A wine displaying intense flavours and texture.

CELLARING:

Drink now, or cellar for 10-15 years
